How do Autonomous Floor Scrubbers work?

1. About the Self-driving soul of the Scrubber

The Autonomous Software the "Brain" is the King

Autonomous Scrubber Robots are great! They are incredibly flexible during their cleaning tasks, and they can adapt to changing environmental and workforce needs.

Adaptability is given by cutting-edge contour based navigation, a specific characteristic of Autonomous Mobile Robots. Thanks to the natural navigation, these robots can map the surrounding environment and navigate and localize themselves using walls, columns, etc.

Autonomous cleaning robots are  able to redefine routes or paths and avoid obstacles. An AMR doesn't require predefined fixed paths. It can define its route on-the-fly. If an obstacle is detected, the robot adjusts its path to navigate around the object.

AMR Obstacle avoidance

The best autonomous floor scrubbers run with advanced management and AI systems. Tipically they are  web-based software. All the robots are connected to a cloud-based reporting system that allows to monitor, manage and track your entire fleet of robots remotely and in real time.

These advanced systems provide highly-detailed reports of every cleaning operation, including precision productivity metrics and coverage maps.

Detailed performance and usage metrics for each robot, with fundamentals such running time, time needed to clean a defined surface, heat maps indicating the areas cleaned, etc.

Anomalies, robot failures, battery level, etc.

All these data can be used to optimize performance and improve floor cleaning results.

Reports can be viewed by users in cloud systems with friendly user interfaces.

2. Cleanliness Requirements... as much as possible... of course

clean scrubber factory floor

Investing in an industrial autonomous floor scrubber will save you time, money and effort.

In order to get the best value out of your machine, you need to find the one best suited to your specific needs.

So…  what are your specific needs?

How large is the surface that you want to clean?

Automatic Floor Scrubbers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The type of your machine will depend on how big is the surface that you have to clean.

Take your time to carefully evaluate all the areas where the robotic floor scrubber could be used.

Consid er the total square footage of the area, the cleanable square footage, the presence of aisles, ramps and doorways.

Of course, for large areas, it is better to have big autonomous floor scrubbers.

There are two key factors to be taken into consideration:

Tank Capacity... at least 29 gal (110 l)

Battery Capacity

If you have a machine that can go further with one tank, and you can save one dump and refill a day, thus you can save around half an hour a day of unproductive task. Over several years, that half hour saving could be enough to pay off the machine. So look at the total cost of ownership, not just the initial purchase price.

What kind of surfaces do you need to clean?

Some scrubbers are more powerful than others so it is important to consider the type of floor that your robot scrubber will be cleaning.

Industrial floors in manufacturing and warehousing environments can probably handle something more powerful and robust whereas hardwood floors may require something a little more gentle.

Typically a floor scrubber should be used when you have no debris on the floor. Nevertheless, in warehouse floors, for example, it could small solid debris, in this case, the use of a cylindrical scrubber dryer simplifies the collection while scrubbing the floor.

How much cleaning is required?

Some industries and businesses may require a more robust and regular clean than others.

For example, hospitals, food and beverage industry or pharma businessess will require thorough and regular cleaning to a higher standard than perhaps an automotive plant.

They need to make sure that all surfaces are always completely hygienic and free of germs, but they will also most likely require the removal of all sorts of sticky substances that other industries or businesses might not encounter.

Thinking about exactly how much cleaning is required will therefore help you to narrow down the type of machine you need.

3. Autonomous Floor scrubber deck type

Basically, there are 3 different deck types: Disc, Cylindrical, Orbital

cilindrical and disc brushes autonomous robot

comparison cilindrical and disc brushes autonomous robot

1. Self driving floor scrubber with Disc Deck

The most common is the single disc as its pad are easy to find on the market.

The double disc version has the peculiarity of directing water in the centre of the machine where there is the maximum suction power, reducing the creation of lateral splashes.

Disk scrubbers wash, or strip wax from the floor. Disk machines offer easy to change, variably aggressive, pads or brushes.

These features make scrubbers ideal for retail applications where pads are not only inexpensive but offer a great deal of surface contact for scuff mark control and floor shine.

For industrial applications, disk brushes accept greater down pressure than cylindrical brooms, and heavily soiled floors benefit from heavy down pressure.

2. Autonomous Scrubber with Cylindrical Deck

Cylindrical deck is recommended for the collection of small debris as the brushes usually turn faster removing floor sweepings much better.

The deck equipped with 2 cylindrical brushes is much more effective than the single brush deck.

A cylindrical scrub brush system will (wet) sweep small amounts of solid debris into a removable tray while also washing the floor.

Cylindrical scrubbers usually turn their brushes at a speed that is three times the rotation of a disk brush.

This will often offset the greater surface area advantage that disk scrub decks offer.

There are three key factors of cylindrical cleaning that make it a more effective method for deep scrubbing of these floors.

Firstly, cylindrical scrubber dryers feature an increased brush speed. Some scrubbers has a brush speed of 750rpm compared to the average rotary brush speed of 200rpm or 400rpm.

Secondly, cylindrical brushes provide increased contact pressure with the floor, providing a deeper scrubbing action.

Lastly, pads used with disc cleaning rotaries pass over grout lines and crevices; whilst cylindrical brushes reach down to clean the dirt and debris, providing improved cleaning results of these areas.

Although cylindrical cleaning machines such as scrubber dryers may be more suitable for the uneven and ‘difficult’ floors mentioned above, both disc and cylindrical cleaning offer great cleaning results and cost-effective benefits.

3. Floor scrubbing robots with Orbital deck

Orbital deck technology offers great performances and less consumptions, saving solution and energy.

The pad action, that oscillates at around 2000 RPM, grants excellent cleaning results, and using proper accessories can also keep the floor shiny.

The orbital scrubbing technology uses a rectangular scrub head that easily reaches into corners, along edges and into other hard-to-reach areas while leaving a clearly defined cut line.

Combine the high down pressure of orbital scrubbing technology with the best pad for the job to maximize productivity and save on labor costs.

Robotic scrubbers are proliferating, and even becoming the new commercial cleaning standard, because they serve a straightforward purpose. Robots are good at tackling dull, repetitive, labor-intensive tasks, and floor care is one of them.

Rising labor costsincreasing health and safety concerns, and limited resources are other factors contributing to the rapid implementation of robot cleaners, including autonomous floor scrubbers.
